Upcoming Event: Bat Fest 2016
Bat Fest is returning to Austin and for those who have never attended, you’re going to want to start making this an annual tradition. The 12th Annual Bat Fest is taking place this August in which you’ll get to combine the favorite Austin attraction, watching the bats at the Congress Ave Bridge, with live music, dozens of vendors, and fun activities.
There will be things for the whole family to do from the children’s activity area to the bat costume contest. You’ve probably attended a bat showing at the bridge before or you were planning on doing that soon if you’re new to town, but you might want to save it for Bat Fest 2016. Take a look at what to expect at the event.
About Bat Fest 2016
The 12th Annual Bat Fest is a combination of one night for thousands of people to come together to celebrate the bats of Congress Avenue Bridge, local food and beverage vendors, along with arts and crafts vendors and live music while competing for the best costume.
Attendees will get to watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats take their nightly flight from the bridge around sunset while enjoy all of the activities planned from 4pm to midnight. It’s the perfect event for all ages with both family-friendly amenities and a bar available to adults.
What to expect
This year’s festival is taking place on Saturday, August 20th, over at the Congress Avenue Bridge at 100 South Congress Avenue. You can get admission for $25 cash at the gate and no charge for kids 8 and under with an adult or you can purchase early bird tickets for $19 online. VIP pricing for $140 gets you front row standing at the main stage of the Austin American Statesman parking lots, as well as the front row for the North Bird stage and private restrooms, tented backstage, and VIP parking.
The flight of the bats typically happens between 7pm and 8:45pm but the emergence of the bats is hard to predict since they are wild animals. The emergence takes around 30 minutes and is a sight to be seen from the bridge and the water below. The sunset behind the emergence is a truly memorable experience.
Guests can wear their best bat costume and the prize for the best adult costume wins $100 with another $100 for the best children costume. The audience will get to select the winner by having costumer-wearers head up on stage for the vote.
Speaking of the stage, you’ll get to hear exciting live music throughout the night. Check out bands like Blue October, American Authors, Vox Vendetta, and Puddle of Mudd. Many will stay at the Radisson Hotel afterwards since it’s the closest to the event and offers some of the best views of the bats.
You’ll be able to access park in paid lots around the area as well as the Austin American Statesman Parking Lot at 305 S Congress, Palmer Events Center Garage at S 1st and Riverside, and a few others. Walk around during the event to see over 75 arts & crafts vendors, experience bat activities and children’s activities, and to enjoy delicious food and drink.
If you haven’t seen the bats in Austin yet, you may want to save them for this special occasion. Check out the 12th Annual Bat Fest this August with the whole family.
