Top 7 Historic Neighborhoods Found in Austin, TX

Austin, Texas is full of history and many neighborhoods throughout the city provide great historic homes. If you want to enjoy living in an older home with plenty of character, you need to know where to go in Austin. Here are seven of the top historic neighborhoods found in Austin.

Downtown Austin

In Downtown, you will find a variety of housing options. The West Line Historic District is one of the best spots for homes from the 1910's and 1930's. Many of these homes fit the Classical Revival and Craftsman styles and some have even been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Another area of Downtown Austin featuring historic homes is found near North Lamar Boulevard. This area features late 19th century and some early 20th century homes. Most of these are stately mansions with beautiful details. Some have been updated, but most still keep with the old time period.

Old Enfield

Those seeking colonial style homes will find them in Old Enfield. This neighborhood used to be known as the place for lawmakers, judges and UT coaches. Today, it's one of the most popular historic areas with plenty of homes to choose from throughout.

Many of the homes were built in the early 1900s with lot sizes of about a quarter of an acre. Homes can be as large as 5,000 square feet in this area, but don't expect a large lot here.

North University

Located north of UT, many homes were built in this area back in the 1860s. This was a very desirable place to live in the late 1800s and still is today. Most of the homes are Arts and Crafts style homes and this neighborhood is ideal for those looking to live near the UT campus.

Clarksville

A unique neighborhood dating back to about 1865, Clarksville was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The rich history brings many new residents to the area, while the historic homes are a bit more on the modest side. Most of the homes here are carriage homes, but some multi-family homes are also found throughout the neighborhood.

Bryker Woods

The neighborhood of Bryker Woods saw most of its growth throughout the 1930s. It's a quiet neighborhood with some historic homes found throughout. The neighborhood does belong to the Old West Austin Historic District, which was established in 2003. Most of the homes found here are smaller historic homes with a high quality of craftsmanship.

Pemberton Heights

Found just north of Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights gained popularity in the early 1900s. The Pemberton Castle is found here, which may bet the most popular of the historic homes in the area. It's another one of the neighborhoods belonging to the Old West Austin Historic District and provides many older homes to choose from.

Hyde Park

Found on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hyde Park Historic District provides Tudor Revival, Bungalows and Victorian homes throughout. Many of the homes date back to the early 20th century. The neighborhood is one of the most walkable in the Austin area and provides wide streets with mature trees. Most of the homes provide high quality craftsmanship, as well.
