How can you have a Merry Christmas in Austin, TX This Year?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and Austin residents are gearing up for some exciting events taking place in town.  Along with decorating the tree, shopping for presents, and thinking about what dish you’re going to bring to the Christmas party, you’ll be kicking yourself later if you don’t make time for some of the Austin-only events.

Whether it’s ice skating at Whole Foods in downtown Austin or riding the train to the North Pole and back, there are a few things you need to check off your Austin holiday bucket list while they are available. Grab your friends and family for these magical activities going on in Austin to help families have the merriest of Christmases.

Enjoy Snow at the Hill Country Galleria

Have your kids ever seen real snow? If not, you’ll definitely want to make sure you make it to the Hill Country Galleria where real snow is trucked in for everyone to build the perfect snowman and hold an epic snowball fight. The whole city will be there for three days this December for no charge located between the mall’s Amphitheater and the Bee Cave Public Library.

Enjoy a Holiday Classic

Do you love holiday classics like A Christmas Carol or a ballet performing The Nutcracker?  Check out the Austin Ballet performing The NutCracker at The Long Center from December 6th-23rd or enjoy the musical based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Zach Theater from November 26th – December 28th.

Take Your Kids to the North Pole

Did you know Austin has a train that takes you to the North Pole and back? Until December 21st, you can hop aboard The North Pole Flyer thanks to the Austin Steam Train Association. Tickets start at $42 but you’ll get delicious Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, and time with Mr. & Mrs. Claus.

Christmas Lights

You can’t beat checking out Christmas lights around town. Everyone pays a visit to 37th Street for the annual Christmas spectacle and makes a walk through the Austin Trail of Lights. You’ll see some of the most creative lighting displays in both locations and it’ll hardly cost you a thing. You’ll also want to check out the Mozart’s Coffee Roasters Holiday experience between 6pm-1am throughout December where 150,000 Christmas lights are set to popular songs.

Get in the holiday spirit

Lastly, get your family in the holiday spirit by picking up your home’s Christmas tree from a local farm. Local farms like Elgin CHRISTmas Tree Farm and Evergreen Farms Christmas Trees are two great spots to check out. You can even decorate a cedar tree at Loop 360 where families bring ornaments and garland to help with the 1.25 mile Trail of Lights in Zilker Park.

While you’re shopping, give back this year by taking part in the Austin Police Department’s Operation Blue Santa campaign where you can donate gifts to families whose kids may not get any presents this year. Then, shop for your family at the Aramadillo Christmas Bazaar for locally-made treasures and then grab a cup of hot cocoa before you head over to Whole Foods Downtown for some ice skating fun on N. Lamar Blvd.

End it all off with a visit to the biggest holiday tree located at Zilker and do some caroling at the Texas Capitol Building. You can have quite a festive holiday around in Austin this year without spending much money and appealing to any age group.
