This is one of the 15 preserves that is managed by the city. Whether you need the exercise, you want to get out into nature, or you want to discover a part of Austin that is unfamiliar, take a look at what you’ll experience at Mayfield Preserve and why you’ll love it.
About the Preserve
Mayfield Preserve is a 21-acre preserve located in central Austin that is perfect for the family that likes to hike. People of all ages will enjoy the hike at the Preserve with younger kids having the opportunity to take trails that don’t have huge elevation changes to older kids that will want to explore a little more.
While it’s not stroller friendly, your walking kids will love taking the trails through the 1 mile long forest or the Laguna Gloria next door where you can take a short hike to climb Mount Bonnell. Once you climb the long staircase at Mount Bonnell, you’ll get some of the best views in town.
What to expect
With six trails to choose from, people tend to just wander and see what happens rather than plan ahead and keep track of which trail they are on in that moment. Most of the trails will lead you to the same location and will get you back to the parking lot which makes it easy to pick any of them and still make it back to the car later.
Since there is no admission fee here, it’s easy to make a day of it with the family and get some exercise while enjoying the scenery. Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed but you will find amenities like picnic tables along the stone walls and a portable toilet at the parking lot’s edge. You may notice a few peacocks as you stop for a post-hike snack or a turtle in one of the ponds in the back of the park.
You’ll notice your walk is full of trees lining the Preserve trails. You’ll have plenty of shade to allow chances to cool off on a hot day or stop for a picnic. The Lake Trail Loop can be accessed near the cottage when you’re at the parking lot and when you make your first turn to the right on the trail, you’ll find you’ve connected to the Lake Trail.
This is the one that will take you to Lake Gloria if you stay on it long enough, which is right on the shores of Lake Austin. You could also veer left from the Lake Trail Loop if you want to go to the Meadow Loop or Creek Trail. Most people take the Creek Trail to the Bell Trail until they get to the stone walls and make their way to Barrow Creek where they can cross and cool off from the hot sun.
When you need to get outdoors and enjoy something unique to Austin, the Mayfield Preserve is the perfect way to get outside and do something that doesn’t require you to even pull out your wallet. Check it out just outside of Mayfield Park.
